About Us

Medina Marching Band

Medina Marching Band is a military styled youth marching band based on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom. The band is primarily made up of young people with various backgrounds, upbringings and musical knowledge. The band caters for total beginners and more experienced players alike who desire the opportunity to play a traditional musical instrument in a traditional setting. Medina Marching Band has band members with ages starting from as young as 8 years old and can even boast many entire family memberships.

Tradition and Pride

Medina Marching Band is proud to be a true military styled marching band with a long standing tradition as one of the country’s foremost youth marching bands. Based on the style of the United Kingdom’s armed forces with the unmistakable red jackets, white helmets and caps, Medina Marching Band, now in it's 31st year has become a welcome and familiar sight at parades, shows and events the length and breadth of the country. In a world where borders and traditions are being eroded and forgotten we strive to keep the United Kingdom marching band’s identity and traditions alive.

Personal Development

Personal development - Medina Marching Band members enjoy many extra curricular activities, encouraging personal and social development and for some, a welcome escape from a poor quality home or after school life. Many members now have careers extending to the armed forces thanks in part to the encouragement of the band through its many facets. Where possible and when on leave these members are eager to come “home” and participate in the band. This level of passion and commitment is prevalent throughout the entire band.

Passion

Passion - One word that sums up Medina Marching Band, we are all passionate about the young band members creating music and furthering their musical ability whilst passing their experience and knowledge to others in the band. Many have watched the band in ore on any number of occasions either in the practice rooms, on the parade ground or in competitions and admired the passion, ability, professionalism and discipline the whole band exudes.

Competitions and Events

Competitions and Events - Medina Marching Band has been involved in many competitions, parades, tattoos and filming events around the UK and mainland Europe, They have been featured in the ITV television production of the critically acclaimed “South Bank Show”, the BBC’s “Children in Need” and have recently had the great pleasure of performing in the presence of HM the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. The band has also achieved the outstanding honour of winning Championship Class of the 2003 National Youth Marching Band Championships staged in Birmingham.

Dedication and Discipline

Dedication and Discipline - The band by its nature requires a high level of discipline and dedication from its members whether in the classroom or on the parade ground as the band practices up to three times a week in preparation for events and parades and strives for members to do their best. Teamwork is vital for the smooth running of the band, however combined with this dedication and discipline we have fun because making music is best being fun rather than a chore! We are also fortunate and proud of the dedicated staff and associates in front and behind the band who are on hand to help, advise, support and make the band the success it is today.

Partnerships

Partnerships - Medina Marching Band is very fortunate to have financial support from local companies and organisations. Further a-field we gain support from the arts, charities, and other government sectors. We are very fortunate having the support of Island Group Industrial Training, Wightlink Ferry Group and Medina High School, our base.  We are always keen to develop further partnerships as keeping the band “on the road” is, as you may expect, with instrument, vehicle repairs and maintenance a costly necessity.
